Alkuaine ( 2018-2026)
Avohakkuiden rajaamalla neliökilometrillä tuuli huojuttaa puunlatvoja kuten aina ennenkin.
Kirja jatkaa Piipon aiemmassa kirjassa Eräitä huomioita Suomen poliittisesta järjestelmästä (Kosmos, 2019) alkanutta suomalaisen yhteiskunnan tarkastelua. Vakavasta pohjavireestä huolimatta teoksen katseessa on huumoria ja hellyyttä.
Alkuaine ilmestyy 30.10.2026.

Table of Elements (2018-2026)
On a square kilometre hemmed in by clear-cuts, the wind sways the treetops as it always has. The sound it makes is like a distant highway.
In the labyrinthine aisles of supermarkets, amid the abundance of goods, people reach again and again for what they want. Under the fluorescent lights the human looks lost – small, but full of desires, each of which can be fulfilled by remembering a four-digit code..
In a ground-floor storefront of an apartment block in a quiet suburb, a violin is tuned and a congregation of five begins a hymn. The blinds are drawn. What kind of god is awaited and worshipped here?
Deep down, 158 metres below sea level, a series of blasts loosens a petrified bed of limestone. It was formed, like everything that matters, from something that was once alive. Now it is made into concrete, which for a moment supports our fragile bones.
Morning dew runs down the feathers of a shrunken dinosaur. The chicken is a bird that has been made into an industrial product, a convenient unit that grows in an instant and soon is gone. Right now it may be happy in a meadow, having escaped the life we have bound it into, a life that does not resemble life at all.
Sakari Piippo's documentary book of photographs and essays, Table of Elements, breaks the Finnish welfare state down into its constituent parts. Not into the old patriotic triad of home, faith and fatherland, but into trees, supermarkets, houses of worship, concrete and chickens. The book continues the examination of the Finnish society begun in Piippo's earlier book Some Observations on the Political System of Finland (Kosmos, 2019). For all its gravity, the book’s gaze holds humour and tenderness.
Table of Elements is published on October 30, 2026. The launch and a pop-up exhibition take place at the gallery Pitted Dates in Helsinki the same day at 6 pm.
"Finland was a compact, warm little idea. It did not make it far, though. What was the welfare state built from, what kind of matter moved through the metabolism of the body of the state? The book looks for answers to these questions in entirely ordinary places." – Sakari Piippo
The book contains 75 photographs and five essays by Terhi Törmälehto, Sanna Hirvonen, Camille Auer, Henriikka Himma and Sakari Piippo. The editor is Susanna Hast, the graphic design is by the award-winning Anna-Mari Tenhunen and the cover illustration by visual artist Joel Slotte. The book is published by Khaos Publishing, a non-profit publisher founded in 2015 and focused on culture and social phenomena.
The artist's work and the publication of the book have been supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Foundation for the Promotion of Journalistic Culture (JOKES), the Patricia Seppälä Foundation, Kone Foundation, the WSOY Literary Foundation, the Otto A.
